What it covers
  • Marketplace individual and family plans, with a check on what subsidy you qualify for
  • Small group employee health benefits
  • Medicare — Supplement, Advantage, and Part D drug plans
  • Dental and vision, which are almost always separate policies
  • Supplemental accident, critical illness, and hospital indemnity
What it doesn't cover
  • Out-of-network care, on most plans — network is the thing to check before premium
  • Pre-existing conditions on short-term plans, which are not ACA-compliant
  • Dental, vision, and hearing under original Medicare
  • Long-term care, which is its own product
Typical limits
Marketplace plans are priced by ZIP, age, and tobacco use — not by your health history. What you actually pay depends on your projected household income for the year.
Worth knowing
Timing controls everything. Marketplace open enrollment runs November 1 to January 15, and outside that window you need a qualifying life event. Medicare annual enrollment is October 15 to December 7. Because marketplace subsidies are calculated on projected income, and we do tax work under the same roof, we can look at the income number and the plan choice together instead of guessing at one and hoping.
